01 / APPLICATION OVERVIEW

Transformer Reservoir Steel Grating for Drainage and Corrosion Resistance

Transformer reservoir steel grating provides load-bearing covers over designated oil collection pits, allowing drainage into the containment system while supporting inspection and maintenance access.

Grating panels are installed above collection areas around oil-filled transformers, with removable sections positioned for cleaning, outlet inspection, and access to services below. Hot-dip galvanizing protects fabricated carbon steel where suitable for the site’s atmospheric and liquid exposure.

Selection should consider pit dimensions, support span, bearing direction, personnel loads, maintenance equipment, and corrosion conditions. Panel openings, fixings, electrical bonding, and removal clearances must be coordinated with the transformer installation, oil containment, drainage controls, and specified fire protection.

02 / APPLICATION SCENARIOS & REQUIREMENTS

Application Scenarios & Project Requirements

Review the operating conditions, users, loads, environment and project requirements before selecting the appropriate steel grating specification.

Transformer Oil Collection Pits

Grating covers provide access over oil collection pits where the approved design permits an open surface. Panels allow liquids to enter the reservoir while transferring walking loads to structural supports around or within the pit.

Perimeter Inspection Routes

Grating sections around transformer foundations provide defined routes for inspecting accessible fittings and checking equipment condition. Panel layouts should maintain electrical clearances and avoid interference with cooling equipment, cable entries, and oil drainage paths.

Containment Drainage Channels

Removable covers can bridge channels conveying rainwater and potential oil leakage toward designated collection points. Channel supports and panel joints should preserve flow while allowing debris removal, with discharge controlled by the approved containment system.

Reservoir Maintenance Openings

Identified lift-out panels provide access for reservoir cleaning, outlet inspection, and servicing of installed drainage components. Panel dimensions and lifting provisions should suit the available working space and the electrical safety arrangements required during maintenance.

03 / SPECIFICATIONS & PRODUCT OPTIONS

Specifications

Common specification references for project enquiries. Dimensions in mm.
Parameter Specification / Options
Material Carbon steel bearing bars, cross bars, banding, and supporting frames to the project-specified grade, such as Q235B, S235JR, or ASTM A36.

Specify the required material standard; these grades are not automatically interchangeable.
Surface treatment Hot-dip galvanized after fabrication to the specified standard, such as ISO 1461 or ASTM A123/A123M where applicable.

Confirm protection for actual rainwater chemistry, oil contamination, cleaning agents, and any prolonged immersion. Define coating acceptance and repair requirements.
Bearing bar size Common access-cover sections include 25 × 3, 30 × 3, 30 × 5, 32 × 5, and 40 × 5 mm. Larger options include 50 × 5, 50 × 6, and 60 × 6 mm where calculations require them.

Height × thickness. Verify the section for clear span, concentrated loads, allowable deflection, and the selected surface profile.
Bearing bar spacing Common center-to-center pitches include 30 and 40 mm; 20 mm pitch may be considered where smaller openings are required.

With 5 mm thick bars, 20, 30, and 40 mm pitches provide clear gaps of 15, 25, and 35 mm respectively.
Cross bar spacing Common center-to-center pitches include 50 and 100 mm, giving nominal grid combinations such as 20 × 50, 30 × 50, 30 × 100, and 40 × 100 mm.

Bearing bar pitch × cross bar pitch. Check opening requirements against access needs and the approved reservoir cover arrangement.
Panel size examples Indicative modules include 600 × 1,000, 800 × 1,000, 1,000 × 1,000, and 1,200 × 1,000 mm, with custom sizes to suit approved pit layouts.

Bearing bar length × panel width. These are fabrication examples, not span ratings; coordinate panel weight and lifting clearance before manufacture.
Walking surface Plain or serrated bearing bars selected for the expected wetting, footwear, and contamination.

Serrations do not eliminate slipping on transformer oil. Structural verification must use data applicable to the specified profile.
Banding and support frames Banding examples include 25 × 3, 30 × 5, 40 × 5, and 50 × 5 mm. Preliminary angle-frame options include 50 × 50 × 5, 65 × 65 × 6, and 75 × 75 × 6 mm.

Banding: height × thickness. Angles: leg × leg × thickness. Verify frame strength, seating width, anchorage, and concrete support separately.
Bearing direction Bearing bars span between designated pit supports, with end bearing and intermediate beams detailed on the structural drawings.

Support interrupted bars around foundations, pipes, and cable entries; ordinary banding alone should not be assumed to carry those loads.
Fixing and bonding Engineered clips or bolted hold-downs, with M8 or M10 clip-bolt assemblies as common options where structurally suitable.

Specify locking details and any electrical bonding connections separately. Ordinary grating clips do not establish verified electrical continuity.
Custom fabrication Framed penetrations, irregular perimeter panels, lifting points, removable cleaning sections, and permanent panel identification from approved reservoir drawings.

Dimension openings and removal routes in millimeters, including clearances to transformer foundations, services, and electrical equipment.

WHY USE STEEL GRATING?

Advantages for Steel Grating Applications

Drainage Into the Reservoir

Openings allow rainwater and potential leakage to pass into the designated collection area. The reservoir, outlets, and discharge controls determine how those liquids are retained or treated after passing through the grating.

Galvanized Surface Protection

Galvanizing after fabrication protects exposed steel surfaces, welded joints, and cut edges. Matching the protective system to the actual exposure helps manage corrosion around wet pits and outdoor transformer installations.

Supported Maintenance Access

Bearing bars and pit supports can be designed for personnel and specified maintenance loads. This provides defined access above the reservoir without relying on drainage components or containment surfaces to carry foot traffic.

Removable Cleaning Sections

Mechanically secured panels can be lifted for sediment removal and outlet inspection. Dividing the cover into manageable sections helps coordinate cleaning access with available handling equipment and required electrical clearances.

Coordinated Equipment Clearances

Factory-prepared cut-outs and panel shapes can accommodate foundations, pipes, and cable entries. Planned framing maintains the load path around openings and reduces the need for modifications near installed transformer equipment.

Visibility Below the Cover

The open grid permits visual checks for accessible debris and standing liquid beneath the cover. Designated removable panels provide closer inspection where supports or other reservoir components obstruct the view.

04 / INSTALLATION & PROJECT PHOTOS

Installation Guidance & Application Photos

Review the panel layout, support conditions, fixing methods and fabrication details before installation, and refer to the application photos for practical examples.

  1. Verify Reservoir and Support Details

Check pit dimensions, support elevations, clear spans, frame anchorage, and specified loads against approved drawings. Confirm work authorization and electrical clearance arrangements, and identify containment liners, outlets, and fire-protection components that must remain undamaged.

  2. Position the Cover Panels

Match panel identification to the reservoir layout and verify bearing direction and end support. Use the approved lifting method, maintain electrical clearances, and check that panel joints and cut-outs preserve access to drainage components.

  3. Complete Restraints and Bonding

Install the specified hold-downs and locking components without obstructing flow or damaging containment surfaces. Complete bonding connections where required by the earthing design. Avoid unapproved cutting of bearing bars and repair coating damage using the specified method.

  4. Inspect Before Handover

Check cover stability, joints, fasteners, exposed edges, and protective finishes. Remove construction debris and verify the approved drainage and containment arrangements. Complete required bonding checks and confirm that removable panels can be handled and securely reinstated.

05 / RELATED REFERENCE & FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What does steel grating do over a transformer reservoir?

It provides a supported cover and maintenance surface above a designated collection pit while allowing liquids to pass into the reservoir. The grating does not itself contain oil. Reservoir walls, the base, drainage controls, and other specified components provide the containment function.

Which grating dimensions are commonly considered for reservoir covers?

Starting bar sections include 30 × 3, 30 × 5, 32 × 5, and 40 × 5 mm, with grids such as 30 × 50 or 30 × 100 mm center-to-center. Panel modules may include 600 × 1,000 or 1,000 × 1,000 mm. Final dimensions depend on pit supports, loads, and removal requirements.

Is hot-dip galvanized steel suitable for a wet transformer pit?

Galvanizing is commonly specified for outdoor steelwork, but suitability depends on the actual exposure. Persistent immersion, water chemistry, cleaning agents, and contaminants can affect zinc performance. Define the wetting conditions and maintenance plan before selecting the coating, and inspect damaged or repeatedly submerged areas during service.

Does ordinary grating provide transformer fire protection?

Ordinary steel grating should not be treated as a flame-arresting or fire-rated reservoir cover. Where the transformer design requires stone layers, flame-suppression devices, separation, or other fire-control measures, those provisions must be specified separately. Any additional supported material also needs to be included in the structural loading.

Do removable reservoir covers need electrical bonding?

The substation earthing design determines the required bonding arrangements. Where bonding is specified, provide suitable connection points and verify continuity, including procedures for disconnecting and reinstating removable panels. Galvanizing is not electrical insulation, and contact through ordinary clips or support seats should not be assumed adequate.

What information is required before reservoir grating fabrication?

Provide reservoir dimensions, support positions, clear spans, panel layout, and design loads. Include bar sizes, grid spacing, finish, restraints, bonding provisions, and lifting requirements. Show transformer foundations, service penetrations, outlets, and fire-protection interfaces so the cover can be fabricated without obstructing containment or maintenance functions.
